Anne paused in Greenwich only long enough for a light meal and for Ralstone to settle the details of the carriage he was hiring from the local inn to take them to London.

Anne was dismayed to find that she didn’t immediately take to her future sister-in-law. Ellen Yelland had similar looks to her brother, but on her the dark eyes and hair seemed somewhat harsh. She was inclined to grovel to a duke’s daughter, but also to make broad comments about marital bliss. She also whined about her straightened circumstances so much that Anne wondered if she was supposed to slip her a few guineas before she left.

Anne spent part of the time writing a letter to Caroline lightly describing her enjoyable stay in Greenwich. It felt truly deceitful, but she had to do it. Caro would expect some news. Ellen agreed to send it in two days.

Then she transformed herself into the elderly widow. She’d chosen to wear a dark gray traveling dress and Jack had found a black cloak, veiled bonnet, and a crook-necked cane. She hated to give up her staff, but she did it. She insisted on taking it with her, however, for later. It unscrewed in the middle, so could fit in her trunk.

Then, the elderly widow, she was ready to leave, to finally end all chance of going back. She did not let herself hesitate. Before leaving, however, she gave Jack two guineas and asked him to give them to his sister as if from himself, so it wouldn’t seem like charity. She didn’t begrudge the money, but it seemed a strange beginning to this adventure.

Then they were on their way. She leaned back in the well-worn carriage and made herself relax. It was done. She smiled at the handsome man beside her, the man who would soon be her husband. “Everything has gone so smoothly! You are a genius.”

He smiled back. “But of course. I have managed to win you.”

She blushed, as much from .being alone with him as from the compliment. “But truly, your plan is so clever. No need to hurtle up the Great North Road afraid of pursuit, and instead of a few boxes or even a bundle, I have a trunkful of clothes with me, including an elegant dress for our wedding.”

He took her black-gloved hand and kissed it. “Don’t tell me what it will be. It’s bad luck.”

She tugged her hand free, teasing, “I don’t think you should be doing that. Not to your ancient grandmother. Am I Mrs. Ralstone?”

“Not yet. But soon. Very soon. Mrs. Ralstone, mine to treasure. For now, however, I think perhaps you should be a great aunt. It is just possible we might meet someone who knows me, and who knows my grandmothers. Better to invent someone. You can be… Mrs. Crabworthy!”

She laughed, but then he dug in his pocket and produced a narrow gold band. He peeled off her left glove and slid it onto her finger.

“Should we?” she asked.

“My ancient great-aunt should have a wedding ring under her glove, my sweet.
